Ingredients
- bread sticks (1)
i.e. 2 half-baguettes, therefore a meal for two people
- sausages (6)
Sausage can be a belgian fricadelle, if you can find it. You can also use ground meatballs, grilled chicken pieces, or even ground steak
- potatoes (0.4)
- salads - (optional)
or other toppings of your choice: fried onions, pickles, etc. The Belgians don't particularly put trimmings in their machine guns.
- mayonnaise
or other sauces of your choice: ketchup, Andalusian sauce, samurai sauce, etc. The mayonnaise with the fries, however, is typically Belgian!
- vegetable oil
for frying
- table salt
Preparation
- Choice of potatoes: Select potatoes suitable for frying, such as firm potatoes like Yukon Gold or Russet.
- Peeling and cutting: Peel the potatoes and cut them into uniform-sized sticks, about 1/2 inch thick.
- Rinse: Rinse the potato sticks under cold water to remove excess starch. This will help get crispy fries.
- Drying: Dry the potato sticks with a clean cloth to remove moisture. The drier the fries, the crispier they will be when cooking.
- Cooking the fries (and the meat at the same time, see next point): Cook the fries in hot oil until they are golden and crispy. Drain them on absorbent paper to remove excess oil.
- Prepare your meat: Cook the meat according to your preferences. If you're using sausage or chicken, you can grill or pan-fry them. If using ground steak, cook it in a pan until cooked through and season to taste.
- Prepare your bread: Cut the baguette in half lengthwise, without separating the two halves completely. You can also hollow out the bread slightly to create room for fries and meat.
- Turn up the machine guns: Place a layer of cooked meat inside the baguette. Add a generous portion of fries on top of the meat.
- Next, add toppings of your choice, such as fried onions, salad, pickles, cheese, etc.
- Season with sauces: Add the sauces of your choice on the fries and meat.
- Serve immediately: Close the baguette over the fries, meat and toppings, then cut into individual portions if necessary.
- Serve hot and enjoy your homemade Belgian machine gun, with a delicious combination of fries, meat and flavors!
